Reset & Recovery with Impact
Local social enterprise solutions through Reset and RecoveryIn 2020, as COVID restrictions hit the globe, Queensland’s economic recovery was in need of impact businesses. As a result, QSEC received funding from Queensland State Government to assist social enterprises (SE) in three regional areas: FNQ, Central Qld and Darling Downs. We developed a series of resources to respond to emerging conditions. Resources were delivered to help pivot SE businesses to emerge from the COVID-19 period with job opportunities, new markets and connected communities using an "Action Lab" approach. ResetThe RESET project was held through the months of September - December in 2020 in three locations: Cairns (FNQ), Rockhampton (CQ) and Toowoomba (DD) with local activators to assist with design, communication and events management. A set of Digital Toolkits were developed for each area to help businesses reset after a challenging year. These toolkits were provided to all participants in the reset program. RecoveryIn 2021 Central Queensland University ran a series of Design Thinking workshops to help social enterprises build from inspiration to IDEATION. There were four successful projects and the ideation sessions were hosted in the three targeted regional areas, concluding in May 2021.
Sandi Taylor: An innovative housing project for aboriginal people, by aboriginal people in Far North Qld. Base Services: A long-term homelessness education and supported living program in Darling Downs. Upcycle CQ: An upcycle project for disengaged young people in Central Qld. Stronger Communities: A collaborative impact business and social enterprise community hub for Gladstone. QSEC will be following their journey and assist their development where possible. A fifth project was selected for additional support through the Rockhampton Regional Council. EvaluationThe Yunus Centre (Griffith University) has evaluated the outcomes and produced a report to evidence the success of the project. |
Upcycle Village at Rockhampton waste facility
During the RESET program in Central Qld, the Rockhampton Regional Council submitted an Expression of Interest to work more explicitly with QSEC and the CQ Uni's Social Innovation Team, Steve Williams and Ashley Clarke.
In 2021 Rockhampton Regional Council developed a proposal for an Upcycle Village to be investigated to assist local business and social enterprises in the circular economy space in the region to identify the opportunities for waste stream education and community activities to generate socially responsible businesses and social enterprise linkages.
The Queensland Government supported this innovation of the project.
